A Day in the Life The Neuroscience portfolio group develops life-restoring therapies and healthcare solutions that span the care continuum. Our teams develop innovative medical technologies that help improve patient outcomes and quality of life around the world. As a Senior Firmware Engineer , you will be responsible for the architecture, design, implementation, verification, and maintenance of embedded software and firmware for next-generation neuromodulation products. You will work closely with systems, electrical, software, quality, and test engineers to develop highly reliable and safety-critical medical device solutions. This role requires strong technical leadership, ownership of complex technical challenges, and a passion for delivering high-quality products in a regulated environment. Primary Responsibilities • Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded firmware for medical device products. • Develop software for microcontrollers, processors, and hardware interfaces. • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate system requirements into firmware designs and implementations. • Participate in firmware architecture, design reviews, risk analyses, and technical decision-making. • Develop and execute unit, integration, and system-level testing. • Support hardware bring-up, debugging, and root cause investigations. • Create and maintain software design documentation in compliance with quality and regulatory requirements. • Contribute to continuous integration, automated testing, and software quality initiatives. • Participate in Agile development activities, including sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives. • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and contribute to engineering best practices. • Stay current with emerging embedded technologies, development techniques, and industry trends. Required Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in related field with 4 years of relevant experience OR a Master’s degree with 2 years of relevant experience Preferred Qualifications • Strong proficiency in C and C++ for embedded systems development. • Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) such as FreeRTOS, ThreadX, VxWorks, or similar. • Experience developing firmware for microcontrollers, embedded processors, or medical devices. • Familiarity with communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, BLE, USB, or Ethernet. • Experience with hardware/software integration, debugging, and laboratory testing. • Knowledge of software development lifecycle processes in regulated environments. • Experience with source control and DevOps tools such as Git, SVN, or GitLab. • Understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and object-oriented programming concepts. • Experience with automated testing and continuous integration practices. • Understanding of Systems Engineering and requirements-based development. • Experience supporting products developed under FDA, IEC 62304, ISO 13485, or related quality standards. • Experience working in Agile development environments.
