US H-1B: cap-subject employers enter a lottery weighted by wage level — Level I gets 1 entry, Level IV gets 4 (DHS projected selection odds ≈15% at Level I to ≈61% at Level IV). Universities and non-profit research employers are cap-exempt. The $100,000 fee for new petitions from abroad is currently blocked by a court order (appeal pending).

About the role

Job Description GM’s Advanced Propulsion group is seeking an experienced and highly motivated power electronics engineer to lead the design, analysis, and development of next-generation power converters for electric-vehicle applications to meet GM’s future Electric Vehicle (EV) portfolio needs. The role will primarily focus on developing next generation Accessory Power Modules (APM) and On-Board Charging Modules (OBCM). This position will convert advanced concepts into robust hardware and system solutions that improve efficiency, power density, cost, packaging, manufacturability, reliability, and customer value. Hybrid: This position requires an employee to be onsite 3 times per week. Roles and Responsibilities: • Develop converter architectures and power-stage concepts, including topology selection, semiconductor selection, magnetics, capacitors, sensing, gate drive, protection, isolation, pre-charge, and filtering • Create and review schematics, power-stage designs, control-board interfaces, electrical interfaces, and design documentation for advanced power-converter prototypes and production-intent concepts. • Perform design trade studies using simulation, competitive benchmarking, component teardowns, cost analysis, efficiency analysis, power-density analysis, and reliability considerations. • Develop and analyze models for converter steady-state, transient, switching, control-loop, thermal, loss, fault, current-sharing, and system-interaction behavior. • Design for EMC/EMI performance, electrical isolation, high-voltage safety, functional safety, serviceability, manufacturability, and environmental robustness. • Lead or support worst-case circuit analysis, derating analysis, DFMEA, fault-tree analysis, design reviews, and design-verification planning. • Plan and execute prototype builds, bring-up, bench testing, hardware debugging, characterization, and design iteration in high-voltage laboratory environments. • Collaborate with controls and embedded-software engineers on modulation, startup/shutdown, protection, diagnostics, communication, current sharing, and system-level control strategies. • Provide technical direction to suppliers and participate in supplier technical reviews, design reviews, DFMEA reviews, prototype builds, test reviews, and issue-resolution activities. • Work with Product Engineering, Systems Engineering, Modeling and Analysis, Cost Engineering, Planning, Program, Manufacturing, and Vehicle Integration teams through ATW, BA, and early GPDP activities. • Drive opportunities for cost reduction, efficiency improvement, power-density improvement, commonization, packaging reduction, and technology reuse across vehicle programs. • Prepare clear technical reports, recommendations, presentations, and gate deliverables for engineering leadership, peers, suppliers, and cross-functional stakeholders. • Document lessons learned, design methods, intellectual property, and process improvements. Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with focus in power electronics • 5 or more years of relevant experience • Demonstrated experience designing and developing DC/DC converters or AC/DC converters • Strong understanding of power-electronics theory, converter topologies, switching devices, magnetics, gate drives, control methods, protection circuits, and power losses. • Experience with electrical design analysis, including derating, worst-case analysis, loss calculations, thermal analysis, and design-for-reliability methods. • Experience with EMC/EMI design and troubleshooting in power-electronics modules. • Understanding of high-voltage automotive systems, isolation, grounding, pre-charge, contactors, fault handling, and laboratory safety. • Hands-on experience with high-volt
