About the role

Job Description GM Defense is seeking a skilled Fabrication/Mechanical Technician to support low-volume builds and prototype development at Milford Proving Ground. Projects range from commercial vehicle modifications to ground-up prototype builds. The ideal candidate has strong experience in prototype vehicle builds, mechanical systems, fabrication, welding, roll cage construction, machining, and troubleshooting. This role requires independent decision-making, project leadership, mentoring, and effective collaboration with engineers and technicians. Key Responsibilities • Execute prototype, one-off, and low-volume vehicle builds. • Fabricate sheet-metal components, roll cages, fixtures, and vehicle structures on a bed plate. • Perform MIG and TIG welding on steel, aluminum, stainless. • Operate shop equipment, including band saws, lathes, mills, and press brakes. • Read complex engineering drawings and perform dimensional builds. • Diagnose build issues and apply root-cause analysis. • Support work ticket completion removing and replacing automotive parts. • Mentor other technicians and support offsite testing. • Maintain safe, clean, and organized work areas. • Possibility of travel up to 5% with the potential for international travel. Required Qualifications • Significant experience with prototype or one-off vehicle builds. • Strong mechanical and automotive skills. • Proficiency in welding, fabrication, machining, and shop equipment operation. • Ability to troubleshoot vehicle-build issues and interpret engineering drawings. • Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills. • Ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision. • Willingness to learn new skills. Candidate must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee or refugee). EDUCATION/TRAINING • 5+ years of automotive technician experience to include both fabrication and one-off/proto-type builds. • Familiarity with CAD / Teamcenter / NX preferred. • Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred, but technical course work, training, professional certifications, Journeyman status or relevant experience required for candidates without a degree beyond High School.
