Join a team of passionate thinkers, innovators, and dreamers — and help us connect people and build communities to create economic opportunity for all. About the team We’re building a new integration team in Toronto focused on bringing core eBay capabilities into adjacent marketplace platforms. The team sits at the center of a strategic initiative to deliver marketplace capabilities such as identity, demand generation, payments, and shipping as reusable services, with the potential to expand across additional platforms over time. Role overview This is a highly hands-on technical leadership role for an experienced backend engineer who can define architecture, write production code, and drive execution in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment. You’ll lead the technical direction for key platform integrations, partnering closely with engineering teams across multiple stacks and geographies while staying deeply involved in implementation. Key competencies & responsibilities • Lead the technical architecture for a marketplace integration team, from early concept through implementation • Write and ship production code; this role is expected to be heavily hands-on • Drive architectural discussions, design reviews, and PR reviews across integration workstreams • Translate ambiguous business or product goals into clear, scalable technical solutions • Partner closely with engineering teams to integrate services across distinct platforms and tech stacks • Help define how eBay capabilities can be exposed as services for other platforms and future integrations • Influence engineering best practices around system design, maintainability, and long-term scalability Must-have requirements • Strong hands-on backend engineering experience in Java • Proven ability to lead technical architecture and make sound system design decisions • Experience building or integrating distributed systems and service-based architectures • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and forming a clear technical point of view with incomplete information • Strong individual contributor mindset with a desire to grow as a technical leader rather than a people manager Nice-to-have requirements • Experience with GraphQL, especially federated graph architectures such as Apollo • Experience with Scala, Kotlin, or other JVM languages • TypeScript and/or Node.js experience • AWS or other cloud infrastructure experience • Familiarity with full-stack or web architecture • Experience in startup, scale-up, or other high-ambiguity environments • Experience in marketplace, commerce, or platform-as-a-service style companies Why this role is interesting • Greenfield team with meaningful architectural ownership • High visibility work tied to eBay’s broader platform integration strategy • Exposure to multiple modern tech stacks across enterprise and cloud-native systems • Strong growth potential as this pattern expands to additional platforms and future integrations • Opportunity to join a growing Toronto engineering presence with significant local investment Additional Details This job posting relates to an existing vacancy within eBay. e
