About the role

What’s in it for you (to start with): • Gross monthly salary ranging from € 4.000 to € 5.700 based on a 40-hour work week. This salary range reflects our career framework. Your final role level will be determined throughout the recruitment process, based on alignment with this framework • 8% holiday allowance - 8% of your yearly salary, which is paid together with your May salary • Saving for old age - we have a savings scheme for old age, which can accrue up to 5% of your monthly salary, or you can get an additional +2.5% to your monthly base salary. And many more benefits that you can read about at the bottom of the job description! Your challenges: The Creatives team works on and is responsible for our Image Editor and related image-processing features. You will be working on the backend and sometimes a little bit on the frontend of a complex distributed web application. Our tool provides several different services, written in Haskell, Python, and Rust. In this position, you will be responsible for the architecture, development, and maintenance of new and old image-related features in our application. An important aspect of our work is scaling our services to the next level, so we can handle another order of magnitude increase in throughput while keeping our app fast and responsive. To give you a sense of scale: a couple hundred millions of images are inspected, transformed and created by our services every day. • Plan and shape the future of the Creatives suite of features with our tight-knit team • Design, develop, and test new product features • Collaborate with and review PRs of other team members • Improve the reliability and robustness of our application • Work on scalability and performance improvements • Collaborate with our other product and platform teams to integrate image-manipulating features with other parts of our tool. Our Stack includes: Haskell, Python, Rust, PostgreSQL, TypeScript, React, Ansible, Terraform, Prometheus. And we run all of our infrastructure on Google Cloud Platform. Who are you? • You have good programming skills in Haskell (or a similar typed functional language) • You are familiar with other programming languages and polyglot programming: we regularly need to make modifications in services written in other languages (especially Python and Rust) as well • You have approximately 4-5 years of professional software engineering experience • You have experience in tuning and scaling a big application • You have experience with web development, web technologies, and APIs • Familiarity with SQL and relational databases, preferably Postgres • Good working knowledge of Linux, git, and the command line. Nice to have: • Knowledge of Haskell libraries like warp, conduit, async, servant, aeson, effectful • Knowledge of Rust and its ecosystem • Prior experience in image processing • Some knowledge of TypeScript/React, which we use in our WYSIWYG Image Editor • A passion to provide value to customers and figuring out the 'question behind the question'. Practical requirements: • EU citizenship or a valid work permit for the Netherlands; you are preferably already living in the Netherlands • Available for at least 32 hours a week, with two days spent at the Utrecht office. Important note: we understand that studies show women may only apply for roles when they feel they meet 100% of the requirements; therefore, we strongly encourage you to apply even if you don't check every box, as we are looking for passionate individuals with potential and a willingness to grow.
