About the role
Groupon connects 42 million customers with local experiences - restaurants, events, wellness and travel - and the million-plus merchants who deliver them. Our mission is to get people offline and into the real world at prices that make it possible. We're an AI-native company in the middle of a platform transformation, moving from a deals marketplace to an experience discovery platform that works for customers and merchants at the same time.
Head of Communications
Writer to the CEO and CFO
Reports to the CFO. Works directly with the CEO. Individual contributor.
Write for a public company's CEO and CFO every week. They'll often brief you out loud, half-formed, between two other meetings. You come back with the post or the letter they read and think: yes, that's what I meant.
Groupon's mission is to get people offline. We're rebuilding the company as an AI-native business to deliver it, and the outside world hasn't caught up. Investors get an earnings line. Reporters get a quote. Someone's LinkedIn post becomes the narrative by accident. Your job is to turn the strategy into one story that investors, press, partners and future hires can understand and repeat.
This is our only communications seat, which is why the title says Head of. It isn't a senior leadership role, and you don't need a decade of PR behind you. We hire on two things: how well you write, and how fast you're getting better. Think of it as a producer's job more than a PR one.
What you will own
The company story comes first. Groupon as an AI-native company, told the way each channel needs it told, down to what ChatGPT says when someone asks about us.
You also run the CEO's and CFO's own channels: X, LinkedIn, all-staff notes, long-form letters, keynotes and interviews. Something goes out every week, and it sounds like them.
Every external moment is yours as well: press releases, the press inbox, the corporate site, launches and the story around each earnings cycle.
And you'll run comms on agents. Your own workflows handle the repeatable drafting. Each commercial leader and seller gets a comms agent of their own, so a rep's note to a merchant and the CFO's letter to investors describe the same company.
Two things aren't yours. Internal comms and employer branding sit with the People team. Disclosure and filings sit with Finance and Legal, and part of the job is knowing which lines Legal needs to see before they go out. There's no agency and no team under you.
What success looks like
Day 7. You've read everything Groupon, the CEO and the CFO published in the past year, and you can point to where the story is cohesive and where it contradicts itself. The press inbox is yours.
Day 14. Your first posts are out in the CEO's or CFO's voice, lightly edited. At least one AI workflow is doing research or first drafts for you.
Day 21. You've taken one strategy conversation and published it as a post, a thread and a long-form piece, and the person who said it recognizes it as theirs.
Day 60. The CEO and CFO publish weekly from your drafts. A launch or an earnings narrative has gone out with no disclosure errors. One commercial leader is trying a comms agent you built.
One year in. Ask an investor, a reporter, a partner or a candidate what Groupon is for and they'll tell you: getting people offline, by pushing the frontier of applied AI. Ask ChatGPT and you get the same answer. Nothing has gone out with a disclosure error. Every seller has an agent that keeps their message in line with the company's.
What we look for
We want to see all of this before we meet.
• Writing that sounds like a person wrote it. A college essay counts if it's your best.
• Pieces that explain a business or make an argument. Event and product copy on its own won't tell us enough.
• Rang
