About the role
Small businesses keep the UK economy moving, and Playter exists to get them the finance they need when they need it. We use data and technology to give established UK SMEs fast, straightforward decisions on unsecured cashflow finance.
As part of the Shawbrook Group, Playter pairs the pace of a fintech with the backing of a bank. That gives our team the freedom to take ownership and the scale to make a difference.
You'll join Playter as our Financial Crime Analyst, owning day-to-day financial crime work and helping the business scale with the controls in place to protect it. You'll have ownership from day one and see the results of your work quickly.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform CDD and KYB on SME borrowers, including directors, shareholders and ultimate beneficial owners, across a range of risk levels and ownership structures.
• Complete customer risk assessments (CRA) at onboarding and on trigger events, assigning a risk rating that reflects ownership, sector, geography and activity.
• Handle escalations to Enhanced Due Diligence for higher-risk customers, including Politically Exposed Persons, high-risk sectors and high-risk jurisdictions, assessing source of funds and source of wealth and reaching a documented decision.
• Review and resolve sanctions, PEP and adverse media screening alerts.
• Conduct transaction monitoring across Playter's lending to protect the business against financial crime.
• Investigate suspected application fraud, including document tampering, director impersonation and broker-introduced fraud.
• Identify suspicious activity and raise internal SARs to the MLRO, completing all follow-up actions.
• Monitor and support ongoing due diligence and periodic reviews.
• Work closely with Underwriting, Sales and the broker team, and lead or support projects across financial crime and operations.
• Help develop new systems and controls that improve efficiency as volumes grow.
• Use approved AI tools to streamline your daily work and improve its quality.
Skills & Experience
• Previous experience in a KYC, AML or fraud role within a lender, bank or other regulated financial services firm.
• Hands-on experience of customer risk assessments and Enhanced Due Diligence.
• Familiarity with the regulations that apply to UK banks, including the Money Laundering Regulations 2017, the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, the Terrorism Act 2000, UK sanctions regimes administered by OFSI, JMLSG guidance, and the FCA's SYSC rules and Financial Crime Guide.
• A solid grasp of AML and fraud typologies, with the analytical skills to identify red flags and make informed, reasonable decisions.
• Clear written and verbal communication, with close attention to detail.
• The organisation and self-motivation to manage several workflows and prioritise.
• A proactive approach to taking on new responsibilities and suggesting improvements to how the team works.
• A fast learner who wants to build a career in financial crime.
Education/Professional Qualifications
Shawbrook is committed to providing opportunities to all candidates, and understand that not all candidates may possess a qualification or education aligned to the role. We will assess each candidate on their individual experience and skills, and not solely on level of education.
