- 237 certified filings for “Software Engineer” (Software Developers) in CA: $191k–$239k, median $213k. Most were filed at wage level III (38%) — 3 lottery entries, ≈46% projected selection odds for cap-subject employers. Source: US Department of Labor LCA disclosure data (Oct 2025 – Jun 2026).
US H-1B: cap-subject employers enter a lottery weighted by wage level — Level I gets 1 entry, Level IV gets 4 (DHS projected selection odds ≈15% at Level I to ≈61% at Level IV). Universities and non-profit research employers are cap-exempt. The $100,000 fee for new petitions from abroad is currently blocked by a court order (appeal pending).

About the role
About the role and team
Engineering at Uber means solving complex, real-world challenges at global scale. The Maps Experience team builds the backend services and technologies that power map-based experiences for millions of users across Uber's Rider and Earner applications. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will design, build, and scale high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems that serve map, location, and geospatial data, enabling critical experiences such as pickup and dropoff, airport wayfinding, and real-time map interactions. You'll tackle challenging engineering problems where performance, reliability, and scalability are essential, while driving architectural improvements and owning services end-to-end, from initial design to production operations. Working closely with mobile engineers, Maps platform teams, and cross-functional partners, you'll help shape the next generation of Uber's map experiences and build systems that directly impact how millions of people navigate and move around the world every day.
What you'll do
• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs that serve map, location, and geospatial data to millions of users across Uber's applications.
• Build and optimize high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems that power real-time map experiences, ensuring high availability, reliability, and performance at global scale.
• Own backend systems end-to-end, from architecture and implementation to deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement in production.
• Drive the evolution of backend architecture, improving scalability, system efficiency, and developer productivity while reducing technical complexity.
• Collaborate closely with mobile engineers, Maps platform teams, Product, and other engineering teams to design and deliver new map-based experiences.
• Identify and resolve complex technical challenges, make pragmatic engineering tradeoffs, and contribute to technical design and code reviews.
• Mentor other engineers, share technical knowledge, and help establish engineering best practices within the team.
Basic Qualifications
• 5+ years of professional experience in backend software engineering or a related technical field.
• Strong proficiency in at least one backend programming language, such as Java, Go, C++, or Python.
• Experience designing, building, and operating scalable backend services and distributed systems in production.
• Strong understanding of API design, service-oriented architectures, data storage, and distributed systems fundamentals.
• Experience with performance optimization, troubleshooting, and building reliable, highly available services.
• Demonstrated ability to independently drive complex engineering projects from design through implementation and production.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers and cross-functional stakeholders.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience building and operating high-throughput, low-latency backend services serving millions of users.
• Experience with geospatial data, mapping technologies, location-based services, or real-time data serving systems.
• Familiarity with distributed caching, database performance optimization, and scalable data-serving architectures.
• Experience with microservices, cloud infrastructure, and observability tools for monitoring and troubleshooting production systems.
• Experience working on backend systems that support mobile applications and latency-sensitive user experiences.
• Proven ability to drive technical improvements across services and collaborate with multiple engineering teams.
