About the role
ABOUT THE ROLE:
Help members find the right care and take the next step in their healthcare journey. As the Engineering Manager for Discovery, you'll lead the team responsible for building intuitive, reliable care discovery experiences that connect members and care teams with the information and services they need, whether care happens virtually or in person.
The Discovery team delivers a search and discovery experience across member- and staff-facing applications as well as the shared data and search infrastructure that powers them. You'll lead engineering efforts spanning care search, relevance, and scheduling — making it easier for members to find appropriate care and for care teams to navigate complex information efficiently.
You'll partner closely with Product, Design, Data Science, and other engineering teams to improve discovery success, reduce friction from intent to action, and build scalable capabilities that support multiple applications. As a hands-on engineering leader, you'll stay close to the technology, contributing to architecture discussions, code reviews, and implementation when appropriate (~15% of your time), while developing a high-performing team.
WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH:
In your first 6 months, you will:
- Build strong relationships with your engineering team and cross-functional partners, establishing clear goals, ownership, and execution expectations.
- Develop a deep understanding of existing discovery experiences, shared search infrastructure, data foundations, and scheduling workflows.
- Define and execute a technical roadmap that balances user-facing improvements, shared platform capabilities, and operational reliability.
- Lead delivery of meaningful improvements to care discovery and search experiences, improving relevance, usability, and conversion from discovery to next action.
- Strengthen shared search and data capabilities to improve accuracy, reliability, and reuse across member- and staff-facing applications.
- Establish data-driven experimentation and engineering best practices around measurement, automated testing, observability, and performance.
- Champion AI-native development practices while growing and mentoring a high-performing engineering team that values technical excellence, ownership, and continuous improvement.
WHO YOU ARE:
- Product-minded engineering leader: You care deeply about building experiences that solve real user problems and translate complex information into simple, intuitive workflows.
- Technically credible builder: You're comfortable reasoning about backend services, data models, APIs, and application architecture. You stay close to the code and use your technical judgment to guide decisions and coach engineers.
- Systems and platform thinker: You understand how to design reusable infrastructure and shared capabilities while balancing product velocity, scalability, and reliability.
- Data-driven problem solver: You define success through measurable outcomes, use data and experimentation to guide decisions, and continuously improve the experiences your team builds.
- Collaborative team builder: You communicate clearly, navigate ambiguity, develop engineers through coaching and feedback, and create an environment where people can do their best work.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3+ years of experience managing a team of approximately 5 or more engineers in a product or platform engineering environment.
- Strong software engineering background, with experience designing and operating backend services, APIs, and data-intensive systems.
- Experience owning and evolving production systems end-to-en
