About the role

About Hiya At Hiya, we’re making business calls more trusted, useful, and effective. Voice remains one of the most important ways businesses communicate with their customers, but the value of a call depends on trust. When customers do not recognize who is calling or why, important conversations are missed, customer relationships suffer, and business outcomes are harder to achieve. Hiya helps businesses create trusted calling experiences that benefit both sides of the conversation: enterprises can reach customers with confidence, and customers can answer with confidence. Our products support branded business calling, trusted caller identity, call performance insights, customer engagement, and voice security capabilities that help businesses strengthen relationships and improve outcomes. This role sits in a core business area for Hiya and is focused on helping SMB and enterprise customers succeed. About the Role The engineering intern position is for an individual contributor who is responsible for architecting, implementing, and maintaining significant systems that serve hundreds of millions of requests per month. Hiya provides high-availability, latency-sensitive capabilities to telecoms, mobile apps, and other partners. In addition, you'll work with engineering teams across Hiya, some in Seattle and some in Europe, to define and deliver shared components and services. From day one, you will be paired with a dedicated mentor who provides structured guidance, technical feedback, and ongoing career mentorship. What You'll Do Design, code, and operate high-performance services and data processing pipelines on a modern technology stack, supported by a structured technical crash course during your first two weeks covering our core tools, architecture, and repositories. Work at a supportive and fast-growing startup with a fantastic team, where you can collaborate with and learn from other great team members. Make an impact in the lives of hundreds of millions of consumers. Be supported in developing your skills and accelerating your career. What We Are Looking For • Engineering: CS majors - 2nd year (graduating 2028) • Excitement to work on innovative technology advancements • A philosophy of iteration and continuous improvement • Working knowledge of building services that adhere to operational SLAs • A preference for velocity over perfection • A commitment to respectful and impactful collaboration • Self-motivated and excited to learn about new technologies Our Interview Process: The Hiya Voice AI Challenge Once we’ve confirmed your eligibility, you’ll receive the Hiya Voice AI Challenge by email-- a chance to build a working prototype of a voice-driven product in one of five tracks: Accessibility, Productivity, Creative Voice, Security, or Real-Time Assistance. You’ll have one week to build it, with optional virtual office hours along the way if you’d like to pitch your idea and get steering from our team first. From there: • Submit and get reviewed. One of our engineers reviews your work. If we’d like to explore your project further, you’ll get a link to book a 30-minute virtual session with an engineer or two-- a quick demo, a walkthrough of your code, and some questions. • Final interviews, in person at Hiya. Candidates who advance join us for a final round in London ( 2nd & 3rd of December) : a debugging/fixing session, a chance to add a feature to your own project, and a conversation about Hiya’s values. AI tools are welcome and encouraged the whole way through. What You Can Expect From Us • Dedicated technical mentorship with structured, regular feedback check-ins • Clear project scope and goals provided right at the start of your internship • Comprehensive onboarding to get you up to speed on Hiya's tooling, code
