US H-1B: cap-subject employers enter a lottery weighted by wage level — Level I gets 1 entry, Level IV gets 4 (DHS projected selection odds ≈15% at Level I to ≈61% at Level IV). Universities and non-profit research employers are cap-exempt. The $100,000 fee for new petitions from abroad is currently blocked by a court order (appeal pending).

The Team You'll Work With
Every fund CFO’s office runs on spreadsheets, email threads, and a pile of portals that don’t talk to each other. We’re replacing all of it. Carta’s Investors business unit is building the system of record for private markets: the ledger, the books, the tax filings, the LP reporting, and the deal pipeline, all in one connected platform. Nearly 7,000 funds and SPVs and $150B in assets already run through it today.
Here’s the fun part: we’re not building another portal. We’re building a programmable back office. An expense lands in an inbox and gets coded to the right entity and staged for approval. A capital call goes out from a sentence. A K-1 is ready on day one. The software does the work, and customers reach it through the AI tools they already use.
It’s a pivotal moment for the business unit. The core is proven (90% of cash transactions reconciled in one day), and now we’re connecting it into a single platform that runs from fund financials to tax to LP reporting. You’ll join small, senior teams that blend startup-style speed with the rigor of software that moves real money.
We’re hiring multiple engineers, and you’ll be hired into the Investors business unit as a whole, then matched to a focus area based on your strengths and interests during our interview process. These focus areas include:
• Fund Financials: Ledger, expense allocation, and cash reconciliation. Get the numbers right, automatically, at scale.
• Tax and Compliance: K-1s, KYC, and audit trails. Compliance as code instead of compliance as a checklist.
• LP Management and Reporting: Capital calls, distributions, PCAPs, and tearsheets. Turn quarterly reporting from a scramble into a query.
The Problems You'll Solve
As a Staff Engineer, you are responsible for the long-term technical health and success of the Investors business unit. You’ll work to:
• Navigate Ambiguity: Tackle the most complex and poorly defined problems at Carta, breaking them down into navigable paths for the rest of the organization.
• Champion Systemic Improvement: Identify and eliminate failure patterns across multiple systems, driving architectural changes that improve scalability and reliability.
• Bridge Technical Gaps: Use your deep understanding of cross-functional domains to align multiple teams on major technical decisions.
• Define the AI Frontier: Lead the charge in transforming how we build by defining the context and building the rails that allow every person at Carta to leverage AI tools safely and effectively. You’ll help move the organization toward a future where AI amplifies our collective engineering impact.
• Uphold Engineering Standards: Set the vision for operational excellence and mentor senior engineers to raise the collective craft of the organization.
About You
• The Tech Stack: You are an expert in building distributed systems. While our primary stack is Python/Django, React, and Postgres, you should be comfortable guiding technical direction across JVM languages, gRPC, and cloud-native infrastructure (AW
